long as hell korra meta post
It’s the line that tripped up the entire fandom and is basically emblematic of the problems with Bryke’s oppression narrative, which was badly written, sent mixed messages, and led most of fandom to believe that systematic oppression against nonbenders is widespread enough and pervasive enough to the degree that a violent revolution in the form of Equalism would be necessary to fix it - a concept I disagree with, and an opinion shared by many if you care to scroll through the korra tags of people like ilookincredibeetus, crystalzelda, and ikkinthekitsune who’ve been doing the meta thing for LoK way longer than I have. Plus, this, which elaborates on the parallels between Equalism and the Cultural Revolution very nicely.
But let’s break it down:
#I pretty much agree with all of this #There’s very little evidence of structural inequality against non-benders #And a lot of evidence of Tarrlok just being a jerk for the sake of getting back at Korra #The claim that Korra needed a wake-up call to care about non-benders is also kind of laughable #The important bit is ‘you’re our Avatar’#Because that’s what hits Korra the hardest #She’d have probably helped either way but it wouldn’t have been quite so obvious why without that line being there
reblogging with these tags cause they give a nice little summary of the main points touched on in this meta.
